Welcome
In our laboratory we mainly study the mechanisms that bacteria, plants or fungi have involved in order to survive at warm subzero temperatures (0C to -4C). We also apply the knowledge acquired by experimentation to answer fundamental questions regarding the crystallization process, ice propagation within and outside cells and ice barriers. Regarding various industrial applications, we are particularly interested in the control of crystallization, using biological and non biological ice nucleators.
PRACTICE INNOVATION
We try to nurture a passion for innovation to students working in our lab. Moreover we have developed educational tools, like novel freezing assays to detect ice nucleating organisms, that are fascinating and easy to learn.
The Laboratory of Biotechnology of the Department of Environmental Sciences is located in the Geopolis campus of the University of Thessaly in Larissa. While visiting head to the cafeteria of the campus and find the corridor to the main building just in front of the cafeteria. The lab is in the ground floor at the end of the corridor on the right.
